Position Details

General Statement

Montana State University Billings is a comprehensive public four-year higher education institution located in Montana’s largest population center, whose faculty is actively engaged in teaching, research, creative endeavors and public service. MSU Billings is unique in that it is one of a select few higher education institutions that also boasts an embedded two-year community college.

The University opened in 1927 and was initially called Eastern Montana State Normal School at Billings and was established to prepare teachers for elementary schools in eastern Montana. MSU Billings has grown, with the city of Billings and Yellowstone County, into the major urban comprehensive higher education center of south central and eastern Montana. The University campus consists of four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Allied Health Professions. Seven miles west of the University campus sits City College at MSU Billings, which serves the comprehensive two-year mission of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

Yellowstone Public Radio (YPR or KEMC) provides in-depth news, public affairs, and cultural programs to a large portion of Montana and northern Wyoming. Specifically YPR provides: news focusing on meaning and detail, public affairs offering complete expression of ideas including opportunity for public participation, and cultural programs expressing heritage and innovation.

YPR’s news department strives to educate, inform, and empower our listeners with high quality news and public affairs programming; pursue the truth; adhere to generally accepted public radio professional journalism standards and ethics; and participate in/represent YPR at the national, regional, state, and local journalism communities. The YPR newsroom treats our listeners/community with respect, civility, and integrity, and acts responsibly.

The Yellowstone Public Radio News Director/Host will report directly to the Yellowstone Public Radio General Manager. The News Director will lead our award-winning News Department and manage day-to-day news operations. This includes: managing and directing all aspects of YPR’s news gathering; ensuring the editorial and professional integrity of YPR’s news formats; and managing and supervising the news staff, news anchors, and student workers/interns. The News Director/Host oversees news hosting duties for community programmers. The News Director is responsible for editorial planning, scheduling, and editing of local news content for both broadcast and digital platforms, as well as performing on-air hosting duties as required, including, but not limited to: hosting local news, public affairs programs, and fundraising. This position often has irregular hours, and may include longer hours than a traditional work shift. This may involve nights, holidays, and/or weekend.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field
• At least three (3) years of professional broadcast experience, preferably in public media
• Supervisory/leadership experience
• Strong, clear communication skills including writing and editing skills
• Organizational skills
• Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills
• Decision-making and problem-solving skills, including ability to make decisions quickly under pressure
• The ability to develop content for broadcast, web, and social media
• This position requires a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 10 pounds of field recording gear

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Experience supervising staff within a media field
• Experience working in public radio/media
• Reporting skills – including interviews, on-air, and breaking news
