General Statement

Montana State University Billings is a comprehensive public four-year higher education institution located in Montana’s largest population center, whose faculty is actively engaged in teaching, research, creative endeavors and public service. MSU Billings is unique in that it is one of a select few higher education institutions that also boasts an embedded two-year community college.

The University opened in 1927 and was initially called Eastern Montana State Normal School at Billings and was established to prepare teachers for elementary schools in eastern Montana. MSU Billings has grown, with the city of Billings and Yellowstone County, into the major urban comprehensive higher education center of south central and eastern Montana. The University campus consists of four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Allied Health Professions. Seven miles west of the University campus sits City College at MSU Billings, which serves the comprehensive two-year mission of the university.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Access Services Librarian coordinates and supervises the public and access service areas of the library, including fulfillment and resource sharing. This requires a commitment to moving the Library forward by adopting new technologies, innovations, and procedures for continuous quality improvement in areas of access service enhancement, library collections and the library environment. This position provides essential unified resource management (URM) administration and support to rapidly changing Library systems and applications. These functions are critical to ensure the performance of the URM and provide efficient access to library services and resources. The Access Services Librarian reports to the Director of Library Services.

The Montana State University Billings Library shares a statewide URM system, and is a participating member of the Treasure State Academic Information & Library Services (TRAILS) consortium. The TRAILS consortium consists of 24 Montana libraries, including the four campuses of Montana State University. The Access Services Librarian serves as one of the technical liaisons for these shared systems and is expected to maintain close collaboration with members and partners of the TRAILS consortium.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Management, configuration and maintenance of the library’s unified resource management (URM) system; i.e. fulfillment configuration, resource sharing configuration and student information system (SIS)
• Collaborate with administration and staff regarding decisions pertaining to access services
• Analyze and evaluate workflows, software, and procedures to ensure best practices and efficient operations of public access service areas
• Provide reports and analytics on library usage and resources
• Provide staff training and assistance as needed in areas of responsibility, including URM, customer service, e-resource management, and patron discovery
• Responsible for assigned hours at the Ask Here Desk, which may include some holiday, evening, and weekend hours
• Serve as library liaison to academic departments
• Participate in the delivery of library instruction for classes in various disciplines
• Teach sections of the Library’s three-credit information literacy course – classes may be online or face-to-face
• Participate in Collection Development activities
• Collaborate with colleagues on the Library’s web design and social media efforts
• Participate in library’s outreach activities
• Engage professionally in the University community, library community, and library organizations locally, regionally, and nationally

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

• Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library science program or completion of degree within one year of hire
• Skill and experience with library URM or integrated library systems
• Experience working with library technology systems and specialized library software
• Recent library work experience
• Recent experience in reference and public and access service areas
• Ability to train and supervise staff in public and access service areas
• Skill and experience in using and teaching web-based databases, discovery service, internet searching and traditional library reference materials
• Effective verbal and written communication
• Ability to work well and complete projects in a team environment with students, faculty, staff, and various stakeholders
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to solve problems effectively and in a timely manner

• Experience in a higher education library environment
• Experience with ExLibris (Alma and Primo) URM systems
• Certified as an ExLibris Alma administrator
